How to Download Transcripts from an Entire YouTube Channel (2026 Windows & CLI Guide)

Target Workflow: Users searching for a reliable way to bulk-download all video transcripts from a YouTube channel without manually clicking "Show transcript" on hundreds of videos or hitting the 10,000-unit YouTube Data API v3 quota wall.

Downloading a transcript from a single YouTube video takes ten seconds inside the browser player. Downloading transcripts from an entire YouTube channel with 300 to 1,500+ uploads is an entirely different engineering problem: browser extensions require opening every tab manually, while the official YouTube Data API v3 Captions endpoint costs 50 quota units per caption download and restricts third-party OAuth access.

1. Why Two-Stage Extraction (Flat Indexing + TimedText) Is Required

To archive a channel reliably on Windows without burning API quota, you need a two-stage pipeline:

  1. Stage 1 — Flat-Playlist Discovery (yt-dlp): Query the channel’s /videos tab with extract_flat="in_playlist" (yt-dlp documentation). This fetches every video ID, title, upload date, and duration in seconds without downloading video or audio streams.
  2. Stage 2 — Subtitle Track Retrieval (youtube-transcript-api): Iterate through the video IDs with a polite request interval (2.0s–5.0s + randomized jitter), prioritizing manual creator subtitles (manual) before falling back to auto-generated captions (generated) (youtube-transcript-api repository).

2. Verified Benchmark on Windows 11 (1,023-Video Channel + 2-Video Live CLI Test)

In our local verification on Windows 11 (Python 3.13.2, yt-dlp 2026.8.19, youtube-transcript-api 1.2.4), we tested both a full 1,023-video channel archive (1,022 transcripts extracted, 1 video without captions, averaging 17,499 characters per video into a 51.4 MB transcripts.csv) and a fast CLI test run:

python cli.py --channel "https://www.youtube.com/@TED" --output "./ted_sample" --limit 2 --langs "en,ja" --delay 2.0

# Verified Console Output:
# [INFO] Step 1: Indexing & syncing channel video list...
# [INFO] Channel indexing complete: 20 videos discovered.
# [SUCCESS] [OK] Lang=en (manual) | Chars=11,630 -> transcripts/vfbNzpd6cIw.txt
# [SUCCESS] [OK] Lang=en (manual) | Chars=9,482 -> transcripts/UNTZMlgf2To.txt

3. Step-by-Step GUI Workflow

  • Step 1: Download and extract Shirube YouTube Transcript Tool v1.1.1 and launch Start-App.bat.
  • Step 2: Paste the channel URL (https://www.youtube.com/@ChannelHandle) and choose your output folder.
  • Step 3: Click 🧪 Test First 10 to verify that the channel’s videos have captions enabled.
  • Step 4: Click ▶️ Extract All / Resume. All progress is saved continuously to channel_cache.db and exported every 25 videos to videos.csv and transcripts.csv.

4. Limitations & Rate-Limit Precautions

Only videos with existing manual or auto-generated subtitle tracks can be extracted. For channels with more than 300 videos, set the request interval to 3.0s–5.0s to avoid triggering temporary HTTP 429 rate limits from YouTube. See our Troubleshooting & 429 Rate-Limit Guide for details.
