How to Batch Translate YouTube Transcripts Across a Whole Channel (EN, JA, ES, DE & More)
Target Workflow: Researchers, analysts, and cross-border marketers who want to study foreign-language YouTube channels (e.g., Japanese, Spanish, German, or Korean channels) in English without translating videos one by one.
When researching international markets or technical creators publishing in another language, YouTube’s player lets you click Settings → Subtitles → Auto-translate on one video at a time. However, if you want to search, compare, or run AI analysis across 200+ foreign-language videos on a channel, you need a batch translation pipeline that stores both the original transcript and the translated text side by side.
1. Two Ways to Batch-Translate a Channel in v1.1.1
Select your target language in the 🌐 Translate To dropdown (or pass --translate-to en) before clicking Test First 10 or Extract All. Each video is extracted and translated in a single pass.
Already downloaded 500 Japanese or Spanish transcripts into channel_cache.db? Select English (en) and click 🌐 Translate Cached (--mode translate_existing) without re-crawling YouTube.
2. Real Tested CLI Example & Output Files
Below is the exact command and verified output from translating cached English TED transcripts into Japanese (--translate-to ja) on Windows 11:
python cli.py --output "./ted_sample" --mode translate_existing --translate-to "ja" # Verified Output: # [INFO] 🌐 Starting batch translation into 'ja' for 2 cached transcripts... # [SUCCESS] [OK] Translated (5,817 chars) -> transcripts/vfbNzpd6cIw.ja.txt # [SUCCESS] [OK] Translated (4,703 chars) -> transcripts/UNTZMlgf2To.ja.txt # [SUCCESS] 🎉 Batch translation finished! Translated 2/2 videos into 'ja'.
When batch translation completes, transcripts.csv automatically includes three additional columns (translated_language, translated_text, and translated_file), and individual transcripts/{video_id}.{lang}.txt files are saved alongside the original transcripts/{video_id}.txt files.
3. Translation Engine Options & Quality Comparison
| Method | API Key Needed? | Speed | Best Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native Target Track (if present on video) | No | Instant (~1s/video) | Channels like TED that upload human-translated multi-language subtitle tracks. |
| Built-in Chunked Machine Translation (Default) | No | ~3–6s/video | Bulk keyword research, topic discovery, and cross-language corpus indexing at zero API cost. |
Optional Gemini API (--translation-engine gemini) |
Yes (GEMINI_API_KEY) |
~5–12s/video | Context-aware technical or idiomatic translation when you have a Google AI Studio key. |
